Given the economic and environmental constraints of North American shale plays, oil-based drilling fluids are not always the optimal choice.
Recognizing that no two shale plays are alike as well as the need to rein in costs, we developed HydraGlyde high-performance water-based drilling fluid system specifically for the economically challenging North American onshore unconventional sector.
The system provides a fast, trouble-free, flexible drilling fluid solution that fits within rigid AFE and HSE constraints. Its novel cost-effective chemistry reduces torque and drag in addition to shale swelling and dispersion. The HydraGlyde system delivers oil mud–comparable ROP, exceptional hole cleaning, and wellbore stability in high-angle-build and long-lateral sections—all while reducing restrictive costs and decreasing environmental impact.
The HydraCap encapsulating additive is a low-molecular-weight, dry acrylic acid copolymer that provides excellent cuttings encapsulation by adsorbing onto the clay surfaces and forming a protective film that prevents cuttings from sticking to each other or the shaker screens. The additive limits dilution rates and low-gravity-solids loading by preventing clay solid from dispersing into the mud system.
How it improves drilling performance:
Enhances removal of drill solids by reducing dispersion tendencies
Minimizes contribution to the viscosity of the system
Enhances flexibility by enabling use in KCl, NaCl, or freshwater
Adds easily to the active system through a premix
Improves shale stabilization
Significantly lowers screen-blinding potential compared with higher-molecular-weight encapsulators
Amine-based HydraHib shale inhibitor provides a high degree of wellbore stability and flexibility with the ability to adjust its concentration.
The inhibitor suppresses clay hydration by intercalating and reducing the space between clay platelets so that water molecules will not penetrate and cause swelling.
The HydraHib inhibitor:
effectively inhibits shale or gumbo clays from hydrating
minimizes the potential for bit balling
provides superior cutting integrity.
The HydraSpeed ROP-enhancing primary lubricant can be used in all types of water-based drilling systems when drilling highly deviated, extended-reach, or horizontal wells in onshore applications.
Demonstrating a coefficient of friction factor of 30.8 compared with 39.8 for a higher-cost lubricant, the lubricant has a non hydrocarbon chemistry that provides the benefits of
lubricity
wellbore stabilization
filtercake enhancement.
The HydraSpeed lubricant is easy to mix and can be added to the mud system through the mixing hopper or directly to the surface of the system in pits that provide good agitation.
DUO-VIS biopolymer viscosifier is a dispersible, non clarified, high-molecular-weight biopolymer used for increasing viscosity in water-based drilling fluid systems.
Small quantities provide viscosity and weight material suspension for all water-based mud systems. DUO-VIS biopolymer has the unique ability to produce a fluid that is highly shear-thinning and thixotropic.
The primary function of DUO-VIS biopolymer is to increase viscosity for cuttings transport and suspension. It performs effectively in all water-based fluids, ranging from highly weighted to low-solids systems. This includes freshwater, seawater, salt, and heavy brine fluid systems.
M-I PAC UL additive is designed for situations where filtration control is needed with only minimal increases in rheology. This additive will perform well in all brine applications, especially saltwater-based fluids and can be used at all densities in either dispersed or non-dispersed systems. It will encapsulate solids to control dispersion of active shale.
M-I PAC UL additive controls fluid loss in freshwater, seawater, KCl, and salt water. It also aids in the formation of a tough, thin filtercake to minimize the potential for differential sticking.
